Brick bond patterns explained: running, stack, Flemish and more

The bond is the pattern of how bricks overlap. It is structural and it is style.

Running (stretcher) bond

Every brick offset by half over the one below. The most common bond: simple, strong and clean. The default for most modern walls.

Stack bond

Bricks stacked directly on top of each other, no offset. Very modern and grid-like, but weaker, so it usually needs reinforcement.

Flemish and English bond

Older patterns that alternate long and short faces. Traditional, decorative and common on heritage and double-brick homes.

Herringbone and basket weave

Bricks set at angles or in squares. Used for feature panels, paving and infill rather than structural walls.

Choosing one

Most walls are running bond for good reason. The others are for character, heritage matching or a feature. We will lay whichever suits the look and the structure.
